Bored To Death

Suzanne Vega – Luka (Live)

Suzanne Vega was the first major figure in the bumper crop of female singer/songwriters who rose to prominence during the late ’80s and ’90s. Her hushed, restrained folk-pop and highly literate lyrics (inspired chiefly by Leonard Cohen, as well as Lou Reed and Bob Dylan) laid the initial musical groundwork for what later became the trademark sound of Lilith Fair (a tour on which she was a regular). Moreover, her left-field hit single “Luka” helped convince record companies that folk-styled singer/songwriters were not a thing of the past after all, paving the way for breakthroughs by Tracy Chapman, Michelle Shocked, Shawn Colvin, Edie Brickell, the Indigo Girls, Sinéad O’Connor… Read More…

You Am I – Get Up

Centered around the prolific songwriting skills of singer/guitarist Tim Rogers, pop group You Am I is one of the most successful and internationally admired Australian bands of the ’90s. At home, they’ve scored three number one albums, Sonic Youth and Soundgarden are counted among their admirers, and Silverchair even named themselves after a You Am I song. Their influences combine the Who, the Small Faces, the Jam, the Clash, and the Replacements.

Rogers formed his first band while studying arts/law at the Australian National University in Canberra, before forming the first version of You Am I with his school friend Nick Tischler and … Read More…

Maow – Ms. Lefevre (featuring Neko Case)

Maow was a Canadian indie rock band from Vancouver, British Columbia. A pop punk combo, the band was part of the “cuddlecore” scene led by cub.

Maow consisted of guitarist Tobey Black, bassist Corrina Hammond and drummer Neko Case. All three members shared vocal duties.

Originally called Meow, the band released the six-song EP I Ruv Me Too on the small independent label Twist Like This in 1995. They later adopted the Maow spelling, and released the full length album The Unforgiving Sounds of Maow on Mint Records in 1996. Read more…

Townes Van Zandt in Heartworn Highway

Townes Van Zandt’s music doesn’t jump up and down, wear fancy clothes, or beat around the bush. Whether he was singing a quiet, introspective country-folk song or a driving, hungry blues, Van Zandt’s lyrics and melodies were filled with the kind of haunting truth and beauty that you knew instinctively. His music came straight from his soul by way of a kind heart, an honest mind, and a keen ear for the gentle blend of words and melody. He could bring you down to a place so sad that you felt like you were scraping bottom, but just as quickly he could lift your spirits and make you smile at the sparkle of a summer morning or a loved one’s eyes — or raise a chuckle with a quick and funny talking blues. The magic of his songs is that they never leave you alone.<… Read More…

Los Zafiros – Y Sabes Bien

Emulating American doo wop groups such as the Platters and Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers while incorporating bossa nova and calypso rhythms proved a unique and successful combination for the Cuban quartet los Zafiros. Recording between 1962 and 1967, los Zafiros (translated as “the Sapphires”) gained relative fame in Cuba and in Europe, once performing a live show in Paris with the Beatles in attendance.

Their singing is classic doo wop; Ignacio Elejaide’s tenor leads and the competent vocals of Miguel Cancio, Leoncio “Kike” Morua, and Eduardo Elio Hernandez follow. Manuel Galban’s minimal guitar and piano accompaniment gives the music much of its distinctly Cuban element. … Read More…
